The C and JV Lyons High School boys’ basketball teams continue to improve their skills and teamwork and played four different schools in eight days. Most players compete on both the C and JV teams.
Lyons solidly beat Dawson School after returning from the holiday break on Friday, January 6. The C team dominated their game,
winning by a score of 36 to 15. The top three scorers for the game were Jake Owens and David Brett with eight points apiece, and Isaac Roberts with five points. The JV team also won handily, by a score of 33 to 21. Owens and Brett also led this squad on offense with eleven and nine points respectively, while Garrett Geist chipped in six in the winning effort.
On Tuesday, January 10, the Lions faced the Eagles of Gilpin County. Gilpin does not have a C team, only JV. The game was competitive and close throughout but the Lions pulled ahead at the end. Franklin Dorschel was unstoppable and led all scorers with a dozen points, Owens notched eleven, including several three-pointers, and Brett added.
The following day, Lyons had a solid Frontier Academy basketball program in their sights. The C team was an exciting back and forth match, with the teams trading buckets throughout. The game went down to the final minute where Garrett Geist hit some clutch free throws. Lyons outlasted Frontier by a score of 44 to 41. Geist had a double/double scoring a dozen points and grabbing ten rebounds, Brett and Harrison Abernathy scored nine apiece in the winning effort. Although the JV team fought hard, they lost their game 59 to 36 against a strong team. Brett had a season high sixteen points in this contest, Finn Basey poured in eleven, and Abernathy notched in the losing effort.
The final game of the week was against Union Colony’s JV team. While Lyons outsized Union Colony, the Bulldogs used their quickness to beat the Lions 35 to 17 in a very low scoring defensive contest. It was one of those days where the ball would rattle and spin in the hoop only to bounce out over and over. Geist led all Lyons’ scorers with six, while Owens chipped in five and Basey had four points in the loss.
The next JV boys’ basketball home game is on Tuesday, January 31, at 5 p.m. Come on down to the gym to support these young Lions!
